A valid ID, must be current or issued within 5 years, contains a photograph, description, signature of the person, and an identifying number:

U.S. Passport or Foreign Passport
U.S. Military ID

Signer's Capability
The signer must:
Be at least 18 years old
Be mentally competent and signing voluntarily
Understand the document and be able to communicate intent
Be physically able to hold a pen and make a mark
💡What if the signer is under medication?
If mental clarity is affected, notarization cannot proceed per California law. You may reschedule once the signer is fully aware.
💡What if the signer cannot physically sign?
If the signer cannot write, they must make a mark (X) and follow this process:
- Two witnesses are required
- One witness signs the document next to the mark
- Both witnesses must sign the notary journal
- Witnesses must have valid ID and not benefit from the document
